Obituary of Dr. Leonard Denis Brown

December 1, 1926 – October 6, 2017

Denis passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Golden Years Manor, Regina, SK at the age of 90 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean, in 1972 and his second wife, Barbara, in 2008 and his sister, Heather Brown, in 2014. Born in Romford, Essex, U.K. in 1926, Dr. Brown graduated from the University of London (B.Sc.) and the University of Surrey (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). He began his professional career in radiation safety and medical physics at the University of Aberdeen. Denis immigrated to Saskatchewan in 1978 with his wife Barbara and was employed first at the Allan Blair Clinic as Senior Physicist and then at the Saskatchewan Department of Labour, where he was head of the Provincial Radiation Safety Unit. Following his retirement in 1994, he acted as a professional consultant on radiation safety issues. Dr. Brown also served as president of the Canadian Radiation Protection Association. Denis and his wife, Barbara, retired to Brentwood Bay, B.C. in 2004. Following Barbara’s death in 2008, Denis returned to Regina where he remained in his own home until the last few months of his life. Denis will be deeply missed by his friends and all who knew him. Sincere thanks are conveyed to old friends Sandra Rayson Poon, Martha Poon, Don Stevenson, and Jim and Joyce Roll, for their kindness and compassion over the years and to Tara Singh and the staff of Golden Years Manor, who cared for Denis in his final months. Memorial Service will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a children’s charity of choice.
