Obituary of Austin Wellesley Selby

The family of Austin Selby are saddened to announce his passing on Saturday, December 23, 2017.  He was born September 27, 1936 at Brock, Saskatchewan to Francis Wardel Selby and Ethel Irene (nee Clarke) Selby.  He attended elementary and high schools in various Saskatchewan communities in which his father’s employment was located.  Austin graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1958 with Bachelor of Arts and Commerce degrees, also attaining his Chartered Accountant and Chartered Professional Accountant designations and maintaining these until the present time.  He married Virginia (nee Chaykowski) in 1962 in Winnipeg where he was employed by the Canadian National Railways as an Auditor. They moved to Regina that year, where he was employed by the Government of Saskatchewan at the Government Finance Office in 1962, also serving as a Board Member of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company from 1969-1975; and was later employed in various provincial government departments until his retirement in 1989 after suffering an aneurism.  After his recovery, he was employed as an Office Manager at a local law office for a short period before retirement.  He was predeceased by his parents, Francis Wardel Selby and Ethel Irene (nee Clarke) Selby; and his sister Marilyn Anne Friesen.  Austin is survived by his wife of fifty five and a half years, Virginia; their three sons, Wayne of Regina, Murray (Shirley) of Moose Jaw, and Roger (Jeanette) of Ottawa; his grandson Jacob Selby and granddaughters, Brittney and Emily, all of Moose Jaw; three step-granddaughters,  Elishia, Candace and Skylett; four great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; his brother Bob (Bernice) of Lintlaw, and their family; his brother- in-law Gerry Friesen of Ottawa; his sister- in-law Eileen (Don) Maychruk of Ottawa, and their family; and his brother-in-law Lloyd (Linda) Chaykowski of Thunder Bay, and their family. Austin was a fair and honorable man who believed in caring for his family first.  He was in the Naval Reserve in earlier years and enjoyed sailing on Saskatchewan lakes with his sons and his brother, and particularly enjoyed the large family campouts with his wife and sons, his parents and siblings and their families at provincial parks in Saskatchewan.  Austin passed peacefully with his wife and sons by his side on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the Regina General Hospital. We thank Regina EMS, all the staff at the Regina General Hospital, in the Emergency Department, Cardiac and Medical Intensive Care Units. Funeral Service will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 3233 Argyle Road, Regina, SK, on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m.  Those so wishing may make memorial donations in Austin’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, Unit 26-1738 Quebec Avenue, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 1V9, or St. Luke’s Anglican Church, or to any charity of your choice.
