Obituary of Cathleen Shier

Cathleen passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. She was predeceased by her parents William and Lena and her twin brother in infancy Carl. Cathleen is survived by her husband Bruce; son Dale (Carmen) Shier and their daughters Kim (Jason) Lawrence-Shier, Kristen and Carly; daughter Mary (Richard) Ray and their children Melissa and Max.  Cathleen was born in 1930 to her parents Bill and Lena Bojuk and was raised both in Buck Lake and Estlin area. While growing up she loved going to dances and being with friends.  She attended Regina College and later was a student of the University of Saskatchewan where she was just one class short of graduating with a degree in Major Commerce. She was a pioneer at that time, as not many women were in the faculty. She met her husband Bruce in 1959 through a mutual friend and they were married in 1960. Later that year their son Dale was born and six years later their daughter Mary. Family was top priority to Cathleen. Bruce travelled a great deal for work in the early days so Cathleen spent a great deal of time with her parents who were an extension of the immediate family. Cathleen was always selfless driving both her children and parents wherever needed; ensuring the children were well-immersed in many after school activities. Dynamics changed in the family in 1982 when her dad died and Dale got married. More time was then spent with her Mom, Bruce, Mary and church.  Dynamics would change once more five years later when Bruce retired and her mom passed away. She now devoted her time to the other things she loved; gardening, visiting friends and being involved with her Church’s ACW and Altar Guild. When Mary moved to Winnipeg in 1990, her time was now spent with Bruce doing many things together. Bruce and Cathy loved taking trips through the country enjoying the landscape, the fields and the time together. Cathleen’s passion was being outdoors.  She loved gardening, and would take her crops of cucumbers making them into her dill pickles every year. She loved her backyard and especially her apple tree where she spent hours every year peeling and blanching the apples for her apple pies and apple sauce. She loved working with the soil, and took pleasure getting her hands dirty planting her wonderful garden. Cathleen loved many things, but none can compare to the love and devotion she had for her family. Her parents, husband, children and five grandchildren were placed first above all else.  She was a woman of strength and was resilient through her illnesses over the years.  She will be truly missed and forever loved.
