Sister Mary Martin died peacefully at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home on Friday, January 19, 2018. Born in Regina in 1924 to Maria (Kwiatkowski) and Joseph Zywina, Sister was predeceased by her parents and her three siblings, Virginia, Catherine and Phyllis. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, her many teacher friends and past students and by her religious family, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, of whom she was a member since 1942. Sister M. Martin received her early education at North Regina Public School and her high school at Sacred Heart Academy and Sacred Heart College. She attained her B.A. at the University of SK, her B.Ed. and M.Ed. at the University of Ottawa, and her M.A. at St. Paul’s University in Minnesota, USA. Teaching was a work that Sister dearly loved and to which she gave her whole heart. She taught in Lebret, SK for 5 years, in Sioux Lookout, ON for 2 years, and in various high schools in Regina for 32 years. After retiring from full time teaching in 1987 and after enjoying a well-earned sabbatical, she began tutoring students in the mysteries of algebra and geometry as a volunteer at Miller Composite High School for another 14 years. Many former students and fellow teachers will speak of the great influence that Sister Martin had on them. In addition to her teaching and volunteering, Sister was a devoted fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King R.C.
