MICHELE "MIKE" DEIANA

May 23, 1927 – March 8, 2018

Mike Deiana passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Grazia by his side on March 8, 2018.  He was predeceased by his parents Bernardino Deiana and Marianna Deias, and brothers Giuseppe, Salvatore, Antonio and Mario. He is survived by his wife Grazia, children Marco (Donna), Mino (Georgina), Maria (Kiley), grandchildren Mikele, Giovanni, Zoe, Theo, sister Francesca (Francesco), brothers Sebastiano (Francine) and Egidio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was born on May 23, 1927, in the village of Ardauli, on the island of Sardinia, Italy. The eldest of eight children, he spent his childhood and youth on the family land tending sheep and growing olives and grapes. He was a talented horseback rider and dancer, often taking part in local festivals. As a young man, Mike left Sardinia and worked in Belgium for five years as a coal miner. Seeking a better life and fulfilling his sense of adventure, he immigrated to Canada in 1957, immediately beginning a career in construction that would leave his mark around the city. In 1963, Mike returned to Italy and married Grazia, and together they made Regina their permanent home. Mike worked as a carpentry lead man for the City of Regina until his retirement in 1990. He was a true builder who took pride in his ability to instantly visualize any blueprint and bring it to reality. His crew with the City of Regina constructed and repaired many rinks, shelters and buildings across the city, including Taylor Field. Mike also custom built many homes, working well into his seventies. He was always available to help his family and friends with any project. He instilled a hard work ethic and influenced all those around him. Mike was a founding member of the G. Marconi Italian Club, and held various roles on the executive for many years, including president, secretary and treasurer. In his retirement he took great pride in growing a large garden, making wine with his brothers and family every year, and fishing and golfing with his friends. Mike travelled back to Italy on numerous occasions with Grazia and together they hosted their relatives and friends in their second home in Ardauli. He loved Sardinian folk music and dance and would routinely dance a jig. In recent years Mike enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Family gatherings meant everything to him. Mike was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, nonno, and friend. Dad you inspired us to always be our best and we will miss you dearly. May your memory be eternal.
