Obituary of Glen Howard Kehler

KEHLER, GLEN

On Saturday, March 10th, 2018, Glen Kehler passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and care of family and dear friends. Glen was born September 30, 1952 in Altona Manitoba to mother, Marie Kehler (nee Buhr) of Rosenfeld Manitoba, and father, Jacob Kehler of Grunthal Manitoba, who together raised a family of seven children of which Glen was third youngest. The family moved from Altona to Dominion City, Manitoba before moving to Kirkfield Park in Winnipeg.  Upon graduation Glen began a career as a youth detention officer, working with troubled youth to help them discover their potential. A proverbial handyman, Glen was a ‘jack of all trades’ and was always willing to help a friend with a task, and continually looked for opportunities to learn new skills. One particular skill that Glen naturally excelled at was in the hospitality industry. Glen managed many restaurants and clubs throughout his employment career including Henya’s Henhouse in Steinbach Manitoba, and Jake’s bar in Lethbridge Alberta where he would meet the love of his life Cindy and her seven year old son John Terry. Glen, along with his son John Corey Jacob (Jake) moved to Regina with Cindy and John where they set up a life for themselves as a family.

He was best known for his time at the Eagles Club aerie# 4126 in Regina where he was instrumental in moving the club to its current location. Glen worked tirelessly and with passion planning events such as shuffle board and card tournaments, booking entertainment, and he created an environment that increased membership, thus a larger space was needed. This was an exciting time not only for Glen, but for the staff that he supported through leading by example, never afraid to jump in and get his hands dirty in any way that he was needed. Glen was an extremely hard worker who had an ability to make each and every guest feel like they were the most important person in the room. With a warm smile, friendly disposition and an attentive sense of urgency, Glen had the ability to charm and disarm anyone who had the privilege of crossing his path. Glen’s generosity and concern for the well-being of people around him was abundant, buying dinners for friends, hosting pizza parties for the entire floor of the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, and just this past Christmas Glen commissioned a local artisan to craft hand-made mittens for each of the staff. Glen was predeceased by his mother, Marie (2003), father, Jacob (1981), his brothers, Wilfred (2003) and Ervin (2010), and by his loving wife, Cindy (2012). He is survived by his sons, Jacob Kehler and John Terry (Bree-Anne), grandchild, Hannah, brothers, Ron (Rosemary) of Michigan, Elvin (Barbara) of Winnipeg, sisters, Linda McDermid and Colleen Columbus (Christopher) of Ontario, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who all loved and adored him. Special thanks to Marni and Steve whose love and support of Glen was evident to the very end of Glen’s life. Memorial Service will take place at the Eagles Club, 1600 Halifax Street, Regina, SK on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Glen’s name to Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, 2180 23rd Ave, Regina, SK S4S 0A5, where he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by the many staff and residents who cared for him.
