Obituary of David Kevin' McCusker

McCUSKER, David "Kevin, of Regina, Saskatchewan born on May 14, 1923 died September 2, 2008. Predeceased by his parents Ruth and Tom McCusker, sisters Louise, Bernice, Bette and brother Bill; Kevin is survived by his loving wife Marita (Scheuer) and their daughter Georgia; step-children: Ralph (Henrietta), Joyce, Oliver (Lana), Carmen (Lennie), and their families; his 6 daughters: Judith, Mary, Kathryn, Teresa, Virginia, Barbara and their mother; Kevin is also survived by his sisters, Marion and Evelyn; as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Kevin and his father farmed the land between Albert and Pasqua Streets, immediately north of Regina, for ninety-two consecutive years. He received his grade twelve certificate from Notre Dame College and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force graduating as a pilot in 1944. Following the war he attended the University of Saskatchewan Agriculture Degree Course, returning to the farm in 1949. He was elected President of the North Regina Telephone Company, as well as President of the Lumsden Liberal Constituency Association. He became the first Chairman of the Regina School Unit #21, now known as Buffalo Plains School Division. In 1964 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Regina Exhibition Association Limited and served on many committees, and in 1973 was elected President of the Association. Kevin was a charter member of the newly formed Regina Buffalo Days, and in 1968 was elected President of that committee. His efforts were recognized by the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions by bestowing on him in 1979, The Distinguished Service Award, in 1980 The Volunteer of the Year Award, and in 1986 was installed in the Roll of Honor, the highest award in the fair business. Thus he joined a select group of "Triple Crown winners. He became President of The Saskatchewan Jockey Club which at the time was the governing body of horse racing in Saskatchewan. He was called upon to manage racing in Regina and Saskatoon on two occasions, for a period of three years. In 1980, Kevin was honored by the Saskatchewan Division of the Horseman's Benevolent and Protective Association for an outstanding contribution to horse racing in Saskatchewan. Once more in 1990, The Saskatchewan Heritage Equites honored Kevin for his excellent work in Saskatchewan horse racing. He was a member of the Executive of Racetracks of Canada and in 1982, was elected President of that organization, a position he held for two years. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity R.C. Church with Rev. Richard Jasiak presiding. Interment at a later date.
