Gerard "Gerry" Malhiot

Obituary of Gerard "Gerry" Maurice Malhiot

Gerry, beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2018. He was predeceased by his parents, Ida (Dureault) and Leo Malhiot; son-in-law Karel Sedlecky; great-grandson Kade Sedlecky; and two infant sisters. Gerry leaves to mourn his children, Joanne, Denis, Elaine (Rick Kessy and grandchildren Dillon, Conor, and Madeleine) and Karen (grandson Myles, and great-grandchild Owyn); his sister Margaret (Gerry Hooey, their son Terry, great-nephew Tyler (Giselle) and daughter Coryn); and his special friend of many years, Margie Lewis (and her son Dean). He also leaves behind many relatives and friends in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Gerry was born April 19, 1926, and grew up on the family farm in Wolseley, SK. He went to the Abbotsford School, south of Wolseley, travelling by horse or dog cart. Gerry served with the Canadian cadets during WWII. He enjoyed harness racing and trained many horses with his father - the most well-known being Sailor Hal. Dad married Doril (Baril) in 1950. They farmed in Wolseley and Montmartre, and Dad took pride in raising Hereford cattle. In 1979, the family moved to Westbank, B.C. Dad revived his interest in Standardbred horses, raising and training harness horses in both Westbank and Cloverdale. In the early 1990s, he returned to Regina to help care for his mother. Gerry was a life-long fan of harness racing, the Regina Pats, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He loved picking Saskatoon’s and spent many happy hours fishing. He was always interested in world news and had strong views on world events. Dad enjoyed travelling and two of his favourite adventures were a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls and a flight in a WWII B-52 bomber. He enjoyed having morning coffee with his friends and catching up on the news. Dad had a sense of humor, a friendly outgoing manner, and was always willing to converse with a stranger. He and his brothers-in-law (Pete, Dusty, Wilfred, and Victor) played many practical jokes on each other in their younger days, and Louis Dureault was always a very close friend. A very special thank you to Dr. Zaman, who worked tirelessly to help Dad return to good health. Many thanks to the nurses and hospital staff at the Pasqua Hospital, who cared for Dad with compassion during his final illness. At Dad’s request, no funeral mass will take place. A Celebration of Gerry’s Life will take place at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Gerry to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 919B Albert Street, Regina, SK S4R 2P6.
