Obituary of Helen Magdalene Mowrey

Helen passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the age of 91 at Tatagwa View Nursing Home in Weyburn, SK. Helen was predeceased by a son Glen and a daughter Linda Penfold; her parents Hjalmar and Minda Braaten; siblings Helga Satherlie, Borgny Renwick, Olga Odne, Willie Braaten and Ken Braaten. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Gerald Mowrey; son Gary (Joanne) Mowrey; son-in-law John Penfold and grandchildren Geri Zajanski, Julie (Rob) Konowalchuk, James (Denise) Penfold, Mark (Tammy) Mowrey, Todd (Tereen) Mowrey and nine great-grandchildren. Helen is also survived by her sisters Ingrid Parron and Lois Larsen. Helen was born on November 27, 1919 on a farm west of Milestone and attended Sidney School. After working in Wilcox, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. She took her training in Ontario and spent two and a half years working on safety equipment and air sea rescue. She was later posted to the west coast and remained there until the war ended. In 1946, she married the love of her life, Gerald Mowrey. It was a double wedding with her sister and brother-in-law, Les and Borgny Renwick. They shared a yard just outside of Milestone with Les and Borgny and this is where they raised their family. In 1975, they moved into Milestone and continued to farm until 1980. After retirement they spent many winters in the southern United States and enjoyed camping trips in the summer. Helen loved the outdoors, she was either in the garden, raking leaves or shoveling snow! She also made many quilts that we will always cherish. But above all Helens greatest love was her husband Gerry and family. We will all miss her dearly. The family would like to thank Tatagwa House 8 staff for their kindness and care given to Helen during her stay. To honour Helens request, there will be no funeral service. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Family and friends wishing to make a donation in Helens memory may do so to a charity of their choice.
