Obituary of Magdalena Grob

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our mother, Oma and Great-Oma, Lena Grob, on February 5, 2011 at the Pasqua Hospital, with family at her side. Mom was born on May 24, 1920 in Mariolana, Banat, Yugoslavia, the youngest child of Johann and Margaretha Niesner. She was predeceased by her husband Konrad in 1995, her parents, brothers, Anton and Johann in infancy, and by her sister Elisabeth Ortmann. She leaves to mourn her four children, Philip (Lucy); Elisabeth (Brian) Hugel; Theresa (Jacques) and Katherine (Guy) Brocks; six grandchildren, Michael (Dana), Leslie, Christopher (Tamara), Michelle, Megan and Conrad and two great grandchildren Nicholas and Haley; along with nieces, Shirley Pady and Sabine Fulrich, nephew Anton Mai, and cousins Elisabeth Schwarz and Theresa Crandall. Married in 1938, it was not many years later that the war broke out in Europe and she and Dad were separated. From 1944 1948, she, along with her son were placed in the Rudolfsgnad concentration camp. During this time, our father was a prisoner of war and the two did not know if the other was alive. Many did not survive these times. Four years they were released and only found each other by writing letters to her sister in Canada. Reunited, another few years were spent to gain their freedom by working to repay their citizenship before release. With courage and faith, they moved through Yugoslavia and onto refugee camps in Italy, before arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax and finally to Regina on April 16, 1952. For a few short months, Francis was home until moving to Regina. It was here, they were again together as a family. Mom shared much with us and showed us the importance of family beyond all else. With each change in her life, she embraced yet another challenge with determination. Her legacies to us are many including a book of the story of her life. She loved her family and all people, and shared her companionship. And there was always that baking that just happened to be ready to be shared. We wish to thank the staff of Regina Palliative Care, Pasqua Hospital for the tender care given during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance to Regina Palliative Care. May God bless and keep her always. Ruhe in ewigen Frieden
