Obituary of Paul Porcina

Paul died peacefully with his family present on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Veterans Rehabilitation Centre, Regina at the age of 96. He was born October 30, 1914 in Poplar Field, Manitoba and raised in Hodgson, Manitoba. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Katherine and Harry Porcina; sister Stella Olson; brother Peter; his first wife, Kay and his second wife, Margaret. He is survived by a sister, Mary Wilson; his children, daughter Merle of Regina, SK, daughter Pauline Huth (Robert) of Surrey, BC, son Doug (Nancy) of Prince Albert, SK and daughter Kathy (Terry) Venning of Calgary, AB. He was Grandpa Paul to Julie Horncastle (Rod), Jason Venning (Shannon), Kimberly Pennell (Ryan), Mark Porcina (Kate), Bronwen Porcina and Great-Grandpa Paul to six. He took great delight in the achievements of his descendants. Paul joined the Canadian Forces in 1939. During WWII, he served as a dispatch rider in the First Division of the Italian Campaign. He remained in the army with postings in Europe and Canada with the rank of Corporal in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps until his retirement in 1965. After retirement, Paul worked with the Corp of Commissionaires, the Bank of Commerce and SGI. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, travelling and woodworking. He was a passionate reader of Canadian history and politics. Paul was a life member of the N.W.M.P. Lodge #11. He was a former member of St. Andrews United Church in Regina and a supporter of the Salvation Army. Paul will always be remembered for the engaging stories of his lifes adventures. Dad was a wonderful father with a keen interest in his familys education and careers. Dad was a warm person who brought humour and kindness to others. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care that was given to Dad by the nursing staff and Dr. Newton during Dads time at Wascana Unit 3-5.
