Obituary of Herbert Thomas Crispin Read Ball

Herbert Thomas Crispin Read Ball (Cris) of Regina, Saskatchewan died peacefully on April 13, 2011 with his daughter and son-in-law at his side after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Cris was born March 25, 1931 in Langbank, Saskatchewan, the youngest of 6 children. The family then moved to Hazenmore and then to Silton before Cris was 2 years old. Silton was home for the family through the rest of Cris childhood. Cris parents operated the Red and White Store. The family also had a cottage at Saskatchewan Beach that Cris later purchased from his father. Cris has always had fond memories of his time spent in Silton and at the Beach. At the age of 18 Cris went to Normal School in Moose Jaw and started his teaching career in September 1950. He taught in Alameda, near Regina and Lestock before attending the University of Saskatchewan to complete his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. After University he returned to teaching in Kenaston, Drinkwater, and Marengo. Cris joined the provincial government in 1974 as a teacher with the Correspondence School where he stayed until retiring after 35 years of teaching. After his years of teaching Cris maintained his keen interest in history and current events throughout his retirement. He continued spend his summers at his cottage at Saskatchewan Beach. He pursued his interest in photography and was seldom seen without his camera. Cris was always willing to learn new things and became involved with personal computers very early in their development and continued to fill his time for more than 25 years. His computer room always had more than one computer operating. Cris was predeceased by his parents Herbert Allen Ball and Bertha May (nee Read), a son John Crispin in 1961 and a daughter Kathryn Joan in 1969. He was also predeceased by a sister Winnifred Young, brother Edward Ball, brothers-in-law Ian Hendry, Ross Young and Leslie Wilson and sister-in-law Alice Ball. He is survived by his daughter Margaret Ann Ball and her husband Ronald Burkhart of Regina. He is also survived by his brother Harold Ball, sisters Blanche Wilson and Pauline Hendry, and numerous nieces and nephews. Cris family would like to thank the staff of 5F at the Regina General Hospital and at Grace Hospice for their care and support.
