Obituary of Roy Gerald Mullock

Roy passed away peacefully on July 4, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his loving wife, Barb, son Gerry (Darla), son Terry, grandchildren Kevina, Kenda, and Alex, and daughter-in-law Jo-Ann. Roy is also survived by his sister Gladys (Garnet) Mueller, brother Robert (Betty), sister-in-law Verla, numerous nieces and nephews, and their families. Roy was born at Star City, Sask. July 15, 1935 to Robert and Minnie (Hudson) Mullock, re-locating as a small child from Resource, Sask. to Somme, Sask. with his parents where the family resided for many years. Roy was predeceased by his father (1944), mother (1976) and brother Donald (2001). Roy took most of his schooling at Somme, and when reminiscing reminded us that his first educational experience was in a make-shift facility before the first school was built. After completing his final year of high school at Porcupine Plain, Sask. and a brief time of employment with a bank in Hudson Bay, Sask. Roy ventured to Toronto where he took several years of further education, returning to Saskatchewan where he spent the remainder of his life. Having a strong compassion for the less fortunate, Roy was suitably employed for many years as a Community Social Worker in Regina and area with the Salvation Army. He later joined the Provincial Department of Social Services. Roy was instrumental in the establishment of the Training on the Job Program?. He became aware of the social and financial problems of many rural communities, always making it a point that children and youth had the best possible Christmas and meaningful summer camping experiences through his leadership. Roy found enormous satisfaction in being a partner on behalf of the Salvation Army and radio station Z99 in establishing the Santas Anonymous Program. Roy never turned down an invitation to be involved with local and provincial fundraising projects and was instrumental in establishing the Mustard Seed Employment Training and Life Skills Program. For several years Roy was a board member with Sask. Special Olympics and for a brief time was a lay representative on Sask. Cancer Review Board until ill health prevented further involvement. Roy was an avid gardener. He loved nature and cottage life, especially with family and friends. He was excited when he was able to complete his book My Pathway to Wellness?, portraying his many bouts of cancer. Roy truly enjoyed visiting with people and would make a point of getting around to see everyone at a social function. He enjoyed a well planned, home cooked meal with friends and family around the dining room table. Roy was an excellent cook and spent many hours preparing meals, baking pies and canning preserves. Even though he re-located from his home community of Somme, Sask. over fifty years ago, he continued to keep closely in touch, even in recent years. Roy loved his family and was very proud of them. He was a great neighbour, wonderful friend and he enjoyed life to its fullest. He touched so many lives and we are all the better for having known him. He will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for their care and compassion to Dr. F. Williams, Dr. M. Salim, the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic, Dr. C. Johnson and the Palliative Care Team (3A) and Palliative Home Care. In keeping with Roys wishes cremated remains will rest at St. Pauls Cathedral Columbarium. A Celebration of Life will be held at Westhill Park Baptist Church, 8025 Sherwood Drive, Regina, SK on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor David Simpson officiating. Flowers are most gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to Allan Blair Cancer Centre, 204-3775 Pasqua Street, Regina, SK, S4S 6W8, Teen Challenge Saskatchewan, Box 21111, Saskatoon, SK, S7H 5N9 or Eureka Fellowship Society, 1165 Pasqua Street, Regina, SK, S4T 4L1.
