Obituary of Gerrit van der Velden

Gerrit van der Velden of Regina passed away on July 4, 2011 at the age of 76, after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Joost and Maria; his wife of forty-nine years, Jenny; brothers Bas (Bob) and Arie; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wim Groenenberg, Goris Snel, Cor Karreman, Jan van der Ree, and Sjanie van der Velden. Left to cherish his memory are: his daughter Marie (Ron) Wood and granddaughter Jennifer Wood of Regina; brothers, Dick (Hennie), Kees (Martha), Cent (Dineke), and Jan; sisters, Marie Snel, Hennie Karreman, Corrie (Ivo) Notenboom, Mimie van der Ree, Greta (Arie) Kegal, Maartje (Rinus) DeHaan, and Joke; brothers-in-law, Arie, Wout and Cor (Sonya) Groenenberg; sisters-in-law, Dittie (Jaap) VanOudheusen, Elly and Willy Groenenberg, all of Holland; sister-in-law Claudine van der Velden of Regina; close friend Cheryl Weninger of Regina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and Holland. Born in Holland on October 6, 1934, Gerry married in 1955 and immigrated to Canada in 1960. He worked in the construction industry for many years as a bricklayer, stone mason, as well as a carpenter. He was an incredibly hard worker and in his retirement, was always willing to lend a hand helping family and friends with numerous home improvement projects. Over the years he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing, a few winter vacations, and trips back to the old country?. A Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Ave., on Friday, July 8, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. A public visitation will held TONIGHT (Thursday) at Speers Funeral Chapel from 7:00 8:00 p.m. A private interment will be held at Riverside Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina SK, S4P 2R3 would be greatly appreciated.
