Obituary of John Thomson

Ian died Saturday, July 16 2011 at age 86 years. He was predeceased by his beloved youngest daughter Dr. Gaynor Morrow in 1979; parents John and Christina Thomson; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law June and Jim Brown. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Brenda (nee Longden); cherished daughter Heather (Steven) Mazurak; their dear children, Lee (Rob) Penner, Jaclyn (Craig) Rude, Andrew (Alana), Nicholas, and his little sweetheart, great-granddaughter Paige Lee Rude; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Graham and Ethnie Longden; cousins June Ronald, Dunblane, Scotland and Irene Jones and her daughter Chris, Surrey, B.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ian was born in Portlethen, Scotland, educated at Mackie Academy and served in the Royal Corps of Signals in the British Army from 194347. In October 1947 he came to Canada with the Imperial Bank of Canada, and after amalgamation, C.I.B.C. He had a busy career in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, and retired as Bank Manager of Main Branch Sparks St. Ottawa, Ontario. After much thought he and wife Brenda decided to return to Regina, Saskatchewan where they had met and married to be close to their daughter, son-in-law and little grandchildren. He enjoyed many family holidays camping by tent and canoeing across Canada but in 1980, with much searching by son-in-law Steven, he found ideal property at Pelican Pointe and from then on happy holidays were spent working on foundations, paths, etc., and family gatherings. Ian, along with 5 members of the Sons of Scotland, established the Boys & Girls Pipe Band, which became the Fraser Pipe Band, a fact he was always proud of. Ian was a long time member of the Wascana Kiwanis Club and the St. Davids Welsh Society, and enjoyed the Saskatchewan Roughrider games, sitting in section 2 for many years. We would like to thank the medical staff on 4A Pasqua Hospital for all their caring. Ian was a perfect gentleman. He was much loved and will be so missed. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rev. Bradley R. Childs officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers most gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make donations, in memoriam, to the First Presbyterian Church, 2170 Albert Street, Regina SK S4P 2T7.
