Obituary of M. Gertrude Murray

Mary Gertrude Murray known as Gertrude or Gert? died on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Kinmara Care Home, Regina, SK, just short of her 99th birthday. She was born at Weyburn, SK, on September 9, 1912. She was the youngest of nine children, and the last survivor of George and Edith Murray. Gertrudes career was that of a teacher and she practiced that at many levels in country and city schools including overseas in Ghana. A special friendship developed when she taught at Albert School. They called themselves The Secret Eight? and Amber MacLeod is the last remaining member. After her teaching career, she took a position in the Department of Education in the Visual Education Branch hence the school broadcasts began with the CBC. She remained in the position until she retired in June 1974. She was a world traveler, travelling to England, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Bali, Thailand, Iran, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Portugal, Madeira, South America, Holy Land, and China. She loved to tell you about her trips and had a marvelous slide presentation that she shared generously. Her cottage, Grannog? House by the Lake, at Lake Katepwa, was a very special part of her life as she said it was her delight and refuge.? She loved to have company and entertained a lot at the cottage. She was very involved at Carmichael Untied Church and developed a strong bond with Hoa and Nga Long, one of the Regina Vietnamese families. Gert also had a profound love of birds. She also enjoyed the concerts of The Regina Symphony, the plays at Globe Theatre and reading and crossword puzzles were a daily pleasure. Bridge was another passion in which she also excelled. One of her many talents was poetry writing, which often focused on the seasons of the year or nature. Gertrudes life came in contact with many people in all parts of the world and as a result has a far reaching circle of friend she now leaves behind. All are enriched by having been part of her long life. A Memorial Service will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Oglesby officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Weyburn, SK, beside her beloved sister Isabel. Those wishing to make donations in her memory may do so to a Charity of their choice.
