Obituary of Violet Dethridge

The end of an era occurred on Friday, August 12, 2011. Violet Stapleton Dethridge passed away at the age of 100. Violet was predeceased by her parents Stanley George and Eva Grace Dethridge and by all her siblings, Constance Bluebell Bennett, Lorraine Sylvia McColl and Stanley George Dethridge Jr. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Ruth OConnor of Nanaimo, BC; Joan (John) Jensen of Calgary, AB; Sandra (Ernie) Bies of Ottawa, ON; Dianne (Paul) Isaacs of Denbigh, ON; Carl (Rose) McColl of West Kelowna, BC; Marian (John) DiGeso of Kamloops, BC; and Ron (Patricia) McColl of Kamloops, BC. She will be fondly remembered by many in the congregation of St Matthews Anglican Church, Regina and in particular, her former priest Reverend Blair Dixon and his wife Karen. Violet was born in Regina on November 9, 1910. She began her early years in Regina but also spent many of her younger years in Estevan, Kamsack and Calgary. She was a brilliant student and she graduated from Central Collegiate, Regina at the age of 16. Violet first worked for a law office as a secretary and then went to work at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. She worked there from September 1930 to November 1975. By the end of her working career she was responsible for the annual crop report. Violet was an ardent supporter of her church, in particular St. Matthews, and she volunteered many hours with the ACW (Anglican Church Women). Throughout her life she provided leadership and guidance to bible study groups. At the age of 95 she completed Education for Ministry,? a four year theological program, through the University of the South. Violet was a woman ahead of her time! A special thank you to the staff and nurses of Unit 2-6 at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for the care of Violet in her last remaining year. Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthews Anglican Church, 2161 Winnipeg Street, Regina on Friday, August 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow in the church hall. Interment will follow at a later date.
