Obituary of Millicent Agatha Cook

MILLICENT A. COOK Millicent Agatha (Williams) Cook passed away April 26, 2011 in Victoria, British Columbia, 4 months shy of her 99th birthday. Born August 19, 1912 at Grindstone City, Michigan to Hanora Nora? Slavin and Dannie Dan? Stanton Williams, 2nd youngest of 10 children. They moved to Palmer, Saskatchewan in April 1915 with 9 children on an immigration train arriving into Limerick, Saskatchewan. They were met by a brother, Tom Slavin, who picked them up with a team and wagon and took them to live at his farm. Dan bought a farm in the fall of 1916. Our mother graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1934 from the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital and nursed in Gravelbourg, Regina, and Montreal. On December 22, 1936, she married John Jack? Laughlin Cook. From the marriage of 48 years there were 5 children born. Predeceased by an infant son, her parents, brothers Tom, Fred, Ed and Sam, sisters Helen (Ella), Cecilia, Henrietta, Irma and Monica. Millicent is survived by daughter Gertrude (Trudy) (Pat) Kelly, children Danny, Kevin, Maureen, Colleen and Shane. Son Harold, his children, Shawn, Tami, Jody (Joe) and Tara. Daughter Audrey, and her sons Dean, Darwyn, David and Dwayne. And daughter Lynne Anne, and her sons, Grant, David and John. Millicents 4 children added to the family tree; 12 grandsons, and 4 granddaughters, 16 great-grandsons, and 12 great-granddaughters, and 2 great-great-granddaughters. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and first cousins, Tommy Slavin and Francis Hunter, and 3 from the Bad Axe, Michigan area. Our mother was always nursing or specialing for various people while we were growing up. After the youngest went to high school, our mother went back nursing as a supervisor for the Wascana Hospital in Regina. Our parents traveled extensively to various places in the world, after our fathers death in 1984, our mother continued to travel for many years. She moved to Victoria 6 years ago, into an assisted living place, which we think, that, and our youngest sisters T.L.C. extended our mothers life. Our mother received numerous phone calls from her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends to discuss and for her advice on various medical issues they were experiencing. She had such a memory, birth dates and years of birth for her siblings, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and that of the Cook relatives as well. Our mother was an avid Bridge player, would play every day if possible, played all other card games as well. Her favourite expression if losing was (any fool can win if they get the cards). Next to playing cards, she loved curling, baseball, football, horse racing, and hockey (until it got to the point of people out to hurt one another). We would all call her at various times to find out about a game, she always had the information, if her team lost she always knew why as well. The Saskatchewan Rough Riders was her favourite team, the C.F.L. and Riders were formed on her birth year. Our parents were season ticket holders for many years, watching their riders. No one couldve been more disappointed than her when the Riders lost the last two Grey Cup final games. Our mother will be fondly remembered by all that knew her, the care and love she received from her doctor, nurses, McKenzie estates, but none can compare with her daughter Lynne Annes compassionate care. Prayers will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina SK on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Emmett Morrissey presiding. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
