Obituary of Mabel Edith Colquhoun

MABEL COLQUHOUN Mabel passed away peacefully on September 3, 2010 at the Regina General Hospital, with her family at her side. She is predeceased by her mother Merle Cotton (Lee); father Allan Cotton; brother Lyle Cotton; as well as her dear loving husband, Bryan Colquhoun (1993). Mabel will be greatly missed by her children, Janice Krumenacker, Kevin Colquhoun (Lynn), Karen Zatylny (Pat); and grandchildren, Nicole, Kimberley, Jillian, Colton, Carson and Jake. As well, she is survived by her sister Laura Ter Horst; brother John Cotton (Margaret); sister Ruth Ter Horst; sister-in-law Joy Cotton; also, the Colquhoun in-laws, Gordon Colquhoun (Randi), Grant Colquhoun (Irene); and many nieces and nephews. Mabel was born on February 8, 1929 in the Harlington District of the beautiful Swan River Valley in Manitoba. She was raised on a farm by the Swan River and received her schooling at Harlington and Kenville. Mabel completed a secretarial course in Winnipeg. For several years she worked at a law firm in Winnipeg until deciding to participate in a course at the Prairie Christian Training Centre (PCTC) in the Fort QuAppelle area in 1955. She met Bryan there, who came from the Maple Creek area, with interests and aspirations of becoming a United Church Minister. They were married in May 1957 in Durban, Manitoba. Bryan had his first charge with Brora United Church, north of Regina, while Mabel pursued musical studies with the Conservatory in Regina (Darke Hall Campus). From 1959 on, Bryan and Mabel became very busy raising a family of three children and living throughout the years in the charges of Riceton-Gray-Estlin, Glenavon-Moffat, Yellow Grass-Lewvan, Cupar-Southey-Earl Grey, as well as serving the Regina Beach United Church. As time permitted, Mabel became increasingly involved as a pianist, organist and accompanist in the church and community life throughout all the communities she resided in, including her last 19 years spent in Regina. She thrived on contributing where possible and became known for her skills in this area. In recent years, she loved her involvement as an accompanist for several groups in Regina including the M and Ms?, the 49-ers?, the Young at Heart Songsters?, the Mutchmor Choir, the Golden Age Variety Show, the Westminster Sunday School Choir, Government House Tea-times, Eastern Star, and the Broadway Terrace Chapel Time. Mabels other interests included her family, Eastern Star (recently holding the role of Grand Matron?), gardening, oil painting, genealogy, travel, the Saskatchewan Folklore Society, and history/politics. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in Westminster United Church, 3025 13th Avenue, Regina. The service will be followed by a reception. Interment will be held in Riverside Memorial Park.
