Obituary of Richard Anthony Leitner

LEITNER, Richard

It is with deep sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of Richard on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at the age of 82 years. Richard’s memory will be forever cherished by his family. He was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Celestine Leitner of Regina, SK. Richard is survived by his wife Noreen, a devoted and loving caregiver with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage; sons David (Barbara Best) Leitner of Toronto, ON, Douglas (Stephanie Petersen) Leitner of Penticton, BC; and daughter Lisa (Steven) Engel of Regina, SK. He was ‘Papa’ to precious grandsons Joshua and Adam Engel, and Levi Leitner. Richard is also survived by his sister Louise (Steve) Milne of Saskatoon and their children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; many cousins; and special friends. Richard was born on December 27, 1937 in Regina. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School, Campion High School, and the University of Denver where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1961. Richard was an auditor for several years with the Department of National Revenue. Later he became a registered financial planner and worked for most of his career at Investors Group, rising to the position of Division Manager. Richard was also appointed as a Coroner by the Justice Department of Saskatchewan in 1975 and performed in that capacity for 20 years. He also had many entrepreneurial endeavors throughout his career. Richard will be remembered for his commitment to community service where he was a member of organizations such as the Lakeview Recreation Association coaching multiple hockey teams, the Regina Big Brothers Association, the Regina Chamber of Commerce, and St. Mary’s Credit Union to name a few.  He was a member of the Executives Association of Regina since 1979 and served in many capacities including a term as President. Richard was also a longtime member of Ducks Unlimited and served that organization in many positions. He had many hobbies and interests such as model railroading, travelling, golfing, hunting, downhill skiing, playing poker, and boating/recreation at the family cottage at B-Say-Tah. Richard loved to fly and prior to some health issues, he even had a private aircraft pilot license. He and Noreen adventured with family and friends on many wonderful trips and cruises with destinations across Europe, Turkey, Caribbean, United States and Canada. Richard enjoyed many Saturday mornings with his close friends of the “Richard Leitner Breakfast Club”. He experienced a serious life change when he had a major stroke at the age of 57, ultimately forcing him to retire early. Richard’s determination and perseverance enabled him to accept and adapt to the new challenges he faced.
