Obituary of Merle Hazel Karchut

Merle Hazel Karchut

Merle, late of Regina, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years, on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Parkside Care Home where she has resided for the past year. She was predeceased by her husband Alex Karchut; her parents Westcott and Annie; sisters Bernice and Vera; and brother Larry.  Merle is survived by her brother Jack; her children: Jay (Donna), Dawn (Lyle), Anita, Debbie (Barry), Cindy, Rick (Carmen), Randy (Natasha), and Tim (Kim); as well as ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She grew up in Birch Hills/St. Louis, Saskatchewan. Merle was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at a young age and remained a faithful Witness for many decades.  Her relationship with her God Jehovah was one of her most precious possessions. Merle enjoyed sharing amazing experiences of attending large conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses in New York City in the 1950’s and sharing in the ministry when the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses was banned in the 1940’s in Canada.  She worked hard to share her faith with those she loved and we know that faith helped her face the challenges of old age as she looked forward to the beautiful future blessings that her God Jehovah has promised.  Merle moved to the Ituna, Saskatchewan area in the 1950’s where she taught in numerous one-room school houses.  She often spoke fondly of students that she had taught as well as candidly about the challenges she faced as a young woman living and teaching on her own far from her home.  This is where she met Alex.  As a wife and mother, Merle continued to enhance the lives of her family, friends and others through her hard work, generosity and sense of humour.  She loved knitting, crocheting and other handi-crafts, often taking a lot of time to make special presents for the ones she loved.  At Merle’s request, no funeral service will be held.  Interment will take place at a later date at the Kelliher cemetery. Merle’s family would like to thank the staff at Parkside Care Home – South Wing for the kindness and care they showed to both Merle and Alex during their residence there.
