Hazel Brigidear

Hazel was born to parents Henry and Katie Martinuik September 19th, 1921 on a farm near Calder, Saskatchewan. Her father came to Canada from an old country in Ukraine, he worked hard looking after the homestead he started, as well as her mother. Hazel is the youngest child and has two half brothers Walter and Thomas. She attended the country school and received her grade 8 education.

Hazel married her husband Alex Brigidear on November 14th, in 1943, they spent a lot of their time visiting with friends and neighbours. Together they have two boys; Harold (Cheryl) and Walter (Marianne) and one daughter Marie. Hazel has three grandchildren; Andy, John (Tammy), and Kristin (Jon) as well as three great-grandchildren; Kathryn, Bentley, and Kaycee whom she loved to spend time with, as family was very important to Hazel.

Hazel spent her days looking after the children but also the farm animals and gardening. When Hazel would have a lot of left-over food from the garden, she would give it away to those who were in need. When she had some spare time, Hazel enjoyed curling up on the couch and reading a book, listening to old “polka” music or watching one of her favourite shows; Dallas or Beverly Hill Billie’s.

Although Hazel was hard working and busy on the farm; you would always find her wearing a beautiful dress. She enjoyed getting out into the community, whether it was with her Church Ladies League, Calder Community ladies or choir she was always part of something in the community. Hazel also did baking; which involved a lot of homemade bread for family and bake sales.

Hazel was a great writer, she loved to send letters out to her friends and family; people still mention how much they miss getting her letters. She was a quiet and giving woman and always kept the Ukrainian traditions on  all occasions for her family!
