To the Swain family. I never had the chance to meet Hal, but as I am also a former CO of 450 Sqn I wanted to pass on that he is in the thoughts of all the Vikings that have served with over the years. His obituary was shared on a 450 Sqn Facebook page to help spread the word. Our condolences and thoughts are with you. By Air to Battle! Colin Coakwell

I am so very sorry to have read that Hal had passed. Hal and I were colleagues of Emergency Preparedness Canada for a number of years. We kept in touch via email through the intervening years. Hal was very respected across Canada as the Saskatchewan Regional Director. His calm demeanor, vast experiences and sense of humour were appreciated by many.
I extend my sincerest sympathies to Hal's family. I know that he certainly loved them all. And I hope that Moses is safe with the family.
We all lost a great friend.

My Condolences to all of your family.
Hal and I first met through our respective careers in Emergency Preparedness. We immediately got along and understood each other and realized why when learned that we were Both Canadian Army Apprentices at 16 years of age, He in the Service Corps and I in the Royal Canadian Engineers. Our trust and faith in each other was remarkable as we worked hard advancing Emergency Preparedness in Saskatchewan. I learned so much from Him. I can honestly say I have never met another true Gentleman such as Hal Swain. May you Rest in Peace Hal!!

The phrase “band of brothers” written by Shakespeare and used on the Canadian Army Aviation website is so appropriate when referring to Hal. Once when visiting Texas I arranged for him to meet the LifeFlight crew of the Helicopter service at the hospital where I was employed. It was a surprise to him when we pulled up to the copter. The smile on his face was enormous. It mattered not where he was or with whom the sweet memories of those with whom he served spoke volumes of his life. The crew had him get up into the copter and started asking about his experiences and had it not been for a call for them we might still be there. He fascinated the crew with his experience and every time I saw one of them they immediately wanted to know how Hal was doing. Hal and I exchanged pictures, recipes, stories, sunsets. Maybe it was simply our similar age that made us enjoy the camaraderie we shared. He was without doubt one of the most genuine and kind men I have ever known. He was good and engaging and loved by all who met him. His loyalty and love for Alma and his family was never minimized or in doubt. Whether you were neighbor and or friend, you were valuable to Hal. The word “memorable” isn’t a quality one can possess by design; it is a quality other people endow you with. Hal was memorable and he and Moses made a memorable team. So Dear Hal, know you are loved and respected by multitudes and shall never be forgotten.

We received the phone call yesterday that sadly informed us of your dad’s passing. To hear that he had a difficult summer health wise was disappointing as he loved the summer months, family and the cottage. There are so many memories of Alma and Hal coming to Nova Scotia to visit Blanche & Pete over the years. Blanche was always excited to have them visit as they explored and dined (especially lobster) both in Nova Scotia and PEI. Your dad appeared like he just ‘gave in’ to the ladies and drove them to wherever they wanted to go. He showed so much patience with them that they would give him a ‘day off’ to go golfing with his friends from here. A good drink of scotch before supper was their ‘re-energizer’. The stories and laughter would fill the room. Hal has kept in touch with us even after he was alone and spoke often of his family and Moses. He even reached out when there was that horrific massacre here in April. He knew of the place and was heartbroken that it could happen to a small town. His heart was filled with good will for all people and for immeasurable love for his family. We hope that the many wonderful memories help you through this sad time.
