Terry Berkowitz

Obituary of Terry Berkowitz

Teresa Norma “Terry” Berkowitz, late of Regina, SK, died peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday, January 31, 2021, at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, with her brother Tim at her side. She was 75 years of age. Terry was predeceased by her husband Stephen D. Berkowitz; her parents, Weldon Peter “Don” and Isobel Katherine “Kay” Traynor; and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by her sons, Shawn and Colin (Dianne); her granddaughters Beatrice and Hilary; her great-grandson Meko; as well as her brother Tim (Maria); uncle Robert (Alta); and a dozen cousins in Michigan and across Canada and their partners, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Terry was a sculptor, working in a wide range of media, including concrete, plaster, clay, bronze, silver, and cold-cast aluminum; the size of her sculptures range from larger-than-life to ones that fit in the palm of your hand. Her sculptures and drawings were displayed in many gallery shows and exhibitions in Toronto, Burlington VT, and Fort Hare, South Africa, where she was a Visiting Fellow in Art and taught sculpture to young students and adults. A highlight of her time in South Africa was her meeting Nelson Mandela.

After the death of her husband, well-known sociologist and author Stephen Berkowitz in 2003, Terry worked as an interior designer and sales associate, and as an employment consultant with VABIR, assisting persons with physical, developmental and psychiatric disabilities in search of employment.

In 2009, Terry moved from her studio-home in Vermont back to her home-town of Regina, SK to be a caregiver and companion to her mother Kay.

The family wishes to thank the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre and the two Regina hospitals for the incredible care they gave Terry in her final two years. We also want to thank Beth Traynor for all the help and support she gave Terry since she returned to Regina, especially in the last six years.

Speers Funeral Services arranged for cremation. No memorial celebration is planned at this time.
