Obituary of Chester Stanley Day

Chester passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at the age of 93 years. Born near Meyronne, Saskatchewan on August 20, 1917, Chester was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Maggie Day, two sisters, Myrtle Carlson and Phyllis Day, his first wife Elizabeth (Betty) in 1971 and his second wife, Luella in 2008. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter Marilyn Boyd (Keith); and his son, Dennis (Jeri); his grandchildren Kerry (Tracy) of Edmonton, Shelley of Vancouver, Heather of Regina, and Andrea (Pete) of Australia; great-grandchildren Meaghan and Eamon; step-children Cherene Schiller, David Colhoun (Judy), Carol Wilson (Danny), Norma MacLeod (Murray) and Doug Colhoun (Cheryl) and their families; and two brothers, Clifford of LaFleche and Cecil (Joan) of Calgary. Chester grew up on the family farm while attending school in Meyronne. It was during his first venture into trucking and local business that he met his first wife, Betty Rutherford from Hodgeville whom he married in 1940. Chester served overseas during the Second World War with the Engineering Corps in France, Belgium and Holland. On his return, Chester and Betty settled in Moose Jaw where he returned to the trucking business hauling fuel out of the BA Oil Refinery in Moose Jaw. Chester was one of the pioneers of Saskatchewans trucking industry and served as President of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association in the early 1960s. He pursued an opportunity in 1967 to haul merchandise for Federated Cooperatives and moved his family to Saskatoon. During these busy years in Saskatoon, Chester and Betty became active in the Shrine and Eastern Star. He opened a second terminal in Regina in 1970 to haul fuel for the Co-op Refinery. After losing Betty to cancer in 1971, he returned to Regina to focus on his new fuel-haul business. While there, he met Lue Colhoun whom he married in January 1973. The ensuing years were busy ones with graduations, weddings of his expanded family and the arrival of grandchildren. Chester and Lue spent their retirement years between their summer home in Buena Vista and their winter home in Mesa, Arizona. Chester remained active in the Shrine where he was proud to participate in the Drill Corps. Following a stroke in the fall of 2002, Chester moved into Princess Care Villa. Throughout his life Chester never complained and his quiet determination served him well in dealing with his new physical limitations. He continued to delight in visits with family, friends and fellow Shriners. Special thanks to the staff at Princess Villa who cared for Dad most of his last 8 years. Your unfailing love and support are greatly appreciated. Thank-you also to the staff of Unit 3-6, DVA Wing, Wascana Rehabilitation Center, who welcomed Dad and provided comfort and sincere compassion in his final days. A Memorial Service will be held in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Ave., Regina, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 20, 2010 with Rev. Ron Sutton officiating. Interment to follow in Moose Jaw. In lieu of flowers donations may be made, in memoriam, to Wa Wa Patient Transportation Fund, 2065 Hamilton St., Regina, Sask. S4P 2E1.
