Obituary of Katherine Georgena Gardner

KATHERINE GEORGENA GENE? GARDNER November 26, 1916 March 7, 2013 Katherine Gene? Brown was born at Brock, SK and attended elementary and high school in Davidson, SK. She attended Normal School in Saskatoon, SK and then taught school in the Kent School District, at Bratts Lake and at Bateman. She met fellow teacher, Ray Gardner, when their schools held a Christmas concert together, and they were married in October 1940. They welcomed three sons: Douglas, Trevor and Neil. Following Rays discharge from the Air Force, the family lived in Saskatoon and Moose Jaw before Ray and Gene moved to Regina in 1970 when Ray became principal of the new Wascana Institute (now SIAST). Gene was a charter member of Grosvenor United Church in Saskatoon and an active member of St. Andrews Church, Moose Jaw and Sunset United Church, Regina. She knit, crocheted, hooked rugs, did crosswords and over the years bowled, curled, played cards and square danced. She was an ace? bridge player. Travelling was a favorite activity she enjoyed with Ray and later with her sister. She was always a very organized person and an impeccable housekeeper. Gracious and charming, she made people feel appreciated, important and welcome. In her later years, Gene lived at Wintergreene Estates for almost three years and she truly enjoyed her time there. In March 2010 Gene moved to Solace Care Home. The family wishes to thank the staff at Solace for the compassionate care given to Gene. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and George Brown; brothers, Howard and Douglas; husband Ray; and sons, Douglas and Trevor. Gene is survived by her sister Irene Langley, Ontario; daughter-in-law Maida Gardner; and son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Carol Gardner; as well as nieces and nephews.
