Obituary of Gilbert Blair Windrim
Gilbert Blair Windrim was born on the family farm in the Prosperity District of Saskatchewan on October 17, 1936 to Clarence and Eulalia Windrim. Growing up on the farm with a big family came with stories of racing to bed in the winter to get the warmest middle spot, sports days and riding a horse to the one room school to light the furnace.
After farming for a few years Gib worked in lumber camps in BC before once again returning home to the farm and to work at the Co-op Service Station in Rocanville, SK. In 1964, Gib and his brother-in-law Walter (Trigger) Olafson purchased the Esso Service Station. In 1965 he met a young teacher, Naomi Grimeau. They fell in love and were married in July 1966. Their first son, Ward was born on the last day the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967. In 1968 Gib sold the service station and was employed as a parts man at Miller Farm Equipment where he worked until he retired in 1996. Gib and Naomi welcomed a second son, Mark in 1973 and a daughter, KaeLeah in 1981. Life was busy with hockey tournaments, piano recitals and weekends at the family cabin at Round Lake. This cabin was where much of Gib’s retirement was spent in the garden or watching Blue Jays baseball and curling. Gib passed unexpectedly at the Regina General Hospital on December 17, 2021.
His infectious laugh and kind spirit will be remembered by his children Ward (Loralee), Mark (Trina) and KaeLeah (Craig); as well as his grandchildren Dakoda (Zach), Dylan, Walter, Wyatt and Gwendolyn; brothers Doug, Ross (Donna); brothers-and-sisters-in-law Liz, Vic (Bonnie), Yvonne, Fred (Ramona), Lawrence (Fern), Paul (Barb), Brenda (Chuck), and Rita (Steve); as well as hundreds of nieces and nephews.
Gib was predeceased by his wife Naomi; parents Eulalia and Clarence; his parents-in-law Laura and Joe Grimeau; brothers and sisters Stanley (Lois), Thelma (Al), Norma (Pete), Ken (Shirley), Darryl, Stewart, Sylvia (Trigger); brother-in-law David; sister-in-law Anne; and nieces Tracy and Karen.
In keeping with Gilbert’s wishes a celebration of life and interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gilbert’s name to the Rocanville Town and Country Golf Course clubhouse, Box 665, Rocanville, SK, S0A 3L0 or rocanville.golfclub@gmail.com
