Obituary of Pearl Kathleen Smith

Pearl passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the age of 87. She will be lovingly remembered by Gordon, her husband of 58 years; sons Don (Darlene) and Brad, daughter Nancy (Dave) Nowosad, grandchildren Pam, Michelle, Jeff, Jordan, and Megan Smith, Kelsey (Aaron) Penner and Curtis (Megan) Nowosad as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Ella Bygrave, brother Don, sister Gwen and her niece Yvonne. Pearl was born on June 15, 1923 in Rosetown, SK, moving with her parents and siblings first to Gallivan, then to Davidson. As a young girl, she was involved in track and field, figure skating, tap dancing and music. She trained as a stenographer, and worked in Davidson at the Town and Municipal Offices, and later the Ag Rep Office, where she met Gordon. They were married on July 2, 1952. Gordons career with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool resulted in moves to Craik, Elrose, Ogema and finally to Regina where they have resided since 1975. Pearl devoted most of her time to the family, but she was also always active in the church where she sang in the choir, played the organ and piano, taught Sunday School and was a member of the UCW. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 65 years and held several offices, including Worthy Matron and Organist. Music was always an important part of Pearls life, and in her 60s she decided to return to piano lessons, continuing to play the piano regularly until three years ago when her health declined rapidly. In the summer of 2004 she and Gordon moved into the Broadway Terrace, where they were able to enjoy three and a half years together until Pearls health made it necessary for her to move to Sunset Extendicare. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010 in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina with Rev. David Eskdale officiating. Interment to follow in Davidson Cemetery. The family extends their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff at Sunset for Pearls excellent care over the past two and a half years, and especially for their support and compassion during her final days.
