Obituary of Rev. Charles Llewellyn Wooley

With sadness and thanksgiving, we announce the death of Rev. Charles Llewellyn Wooley on September 20, 2010 in Regina, at the age of 89 years. Born August 29, 1921 in Utterson, Ontario, Charlie spent his early years in Sault Ste. Marie and Richards Landing, settling in Sarnia in 1929 when his father died of influenza. With a B.A. from University of Western Ontario and an M.Div from Emmanuel College, he was ordained a United Church Minister in June 1948. Shortly thereafter he met Jean Nicholson, and they married in November of that year. He served the Church at Bruce Mines, Sault Ste. Marie, and Owen Sound, Ontario, was a probation officer for three years, and spent 23 pioneering years as United Church Chaplain in Reginas hospitals, befriending and comforting countless patients and families. Charles sang in the Regina Male Voice Choir and played clarinet in the Lions Adult Band; curled in the Regina Ministerial League; was a very good oil painter; enjoyed travelling, carpentry, golf and gardening; and was, with Jean, a founding member of the Adult Social Dance Club. A true gentleman? in every sense of the word, he lived with kindness and dignity and will be deeply missed. Predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Elma, infant sister Margaret, and brother, Woodrow (Vada), Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean; sons, Herb and Greg (Shannon); grandchildren, Jenny, Tim, Alex (fianc TJ and her son Austin), Hannah, Rita and Jordan; two great-grandsons, Xavier and Liam; and by his sister, Edra (Jim). Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2010 in Whitmore Park United Church, 336 Durham Drive, Regina. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (designated to 4 West, Pioneer Village, where Charlie received such loving care) P.O. Box 1697 Station Main, Regina, SK, S4P 9Z9; or to the Mission and Service Fund, Direct Giving Program, The United Church of Canada, 3250 Bloor Street West, Suite 300, Toronto, ON M8X 2Y4.
