Obituary of Elmer Michael Kaszas

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce our beloved father Elmer Michael Kaszas passed away peacefully on the morning of January 24, 2023.

Elmer leaves behind his son Terry Kaszas (Renee), daughter Sandra Kaszas of Regina, Sk. and his two grandchildren Darian and Riley Kaszas to treasure his memory.

Elmer is predeceased by his parents Sándor and Rozália Kaszas, his six brothers János, Lajos, József, Pali, Sándor, Gyula, and one sister Magda, also by Winona Kay Olson.

Elmer was born on February 16, 1932, and raised in Sarbogard, Hungary where his childhood home still stands. He was the fifth child born of eight and has many nieces, nephews and cousins across Hungary and the USA which include Lou in Ohio and Sándor, Gyula and Klára who he visited with on his last trip to Hungary.

Elmer arrived on the East coast of Canada in the winter of 1956 after fleeing Hungary during the revolution. He made his way across the country working for the railway eventually living in Ponteix Sk. From there he moved to Regina, Sk. where he worked for the City of Regina Parks and Recreation for 30+ years. He spent his early years as the groundskeeper of Taylor Field and there grew dads love of football, specifically the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the CFL. We would spend our childhood playing on the field and attending all the games. Elmer, Terry and Riley continue to share their love for the Riders and football, holding season tickets.

Elmer was an active member of the Regina Balaton Hungarian Club until his later years where he spent a lot of time with his many friends eating, drinking and volunteering. Dad loved to listen to Hungarian music, dancing, singing, and playing a tune on his harmonica or accordion. Dads Hungarian culture stayed with him throughout his life, and he shared those traditions with his children and grandchildren. We were fortunate to travel through Hungary together seeing the many places that held special memories and meeting many relatives on a family holiday.

He loved the outdoors and on any warm day you’d find him reading a book, working on his tan, gardening or taking care of the yard. There was always a pot of homemade soup, stew, or chicken paprika on the stove and always enough food to feed all the friends we brought home.

Dad was loved by all and had a nickname for everyone, you couldn’t help but smile or laugh when you were with him. His most treasured were his kisfia, kislány and grandchildren. From the day they were born Papa shared a special bond with Riley his best friend and Darian his little Zsenka, who he would do anything for.

There are not enough words to describe Dad, he was everything and will be greatly missed and cherished for all of eternity.
