Obituary of Angela Oxman

ANGELA OXMAN Angela Oxman, of Regina, died peacefully at home on the morning of April 22, 2013 following a lengthy illness. Angela enjoyed a full and rewarding life. In spite of all lifes challenges she persevered, she kept her faith. Her main focus in life revolved around education, community service and devotion to her family. Angela was always a firm believer in education. Her motto nurture curiosity for it is through curiosity we learn and grow?, epitomized her lifelong pursuits. Early in life, nursing became her first true calling. She graduated as a registered nurse at St. Pauls Hospital in Saskatoon, and thereafter completed her diploma in public health nursing at the University of Saskatchewan and a bachelors degree in nursing at McGill University in Montreal. During her career she worked in public health for the federal and provincial governments and served as the director of nursing in the Regina health department. After marrying in 1973, she continued her nursing career as a home care consultant, and as a medical record instructor at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Regina. For many years of her career, Angela worked at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. First as a bedside nurse, then went on to acquire a standing as a credentialed infection control practitioner. During this time she served on committees with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association and was a founding member of the Saskatchewan Chapter of the National Infection Control Association. Being a history buff, Angela, in her retirement, returned to university and acquired credit courses in Canadian history at the Regina campus. Her interest in education continued in a volunteer capacity as a parent helper in the Mes Amis bilingual program at St. Pius X School. At Sacred Heart school she volunteered as a parent helper with the childrens reading program. Most recently she was involved in the reading program at the Mother Teresa middle school, an innovative school program, the first of its kind in Canada, designed to enhance students opportunities for advanced education. Angela, amid her busy life, always found time to contribute to her community. For many years Angela was a member of the Stephen Ministry program at the Holy Rosary Cathedral parish. Also, she served as a volunteer at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre as a porter and an attendant at Sunday church services. Angela served as interim director of Catholic Family Services. She gave considerable time to help with fund raising for several charitable causes. Angela had varied personal interests. She enjoyed travelling, having visited numerous European countries on two occasions and many places in Canada and the United States. Being adventurous; family camping became one of her favourite summer holiday pursuits. During winter, Angela and family enjoyed cross country skiing at Cypress or Madge Lake or in Wascana Park. Angela enjoyed cycling and was an avid fan of curling, football and baseball. Angela and her sister Rose had the opportunity of attending the Mens and Womens National Curling events and the Mens World Playoff. As for baseball, Angela was the first female coach in the Regina Little League. Nevertheless her greatest love and joy was being with and caring for family. Angela also undertook the responsibility of caring for her 11 year-old sister Rose after their parents, John and Mary DeBin, died. Angela was predeceased by her parents-in-law Morris and Katherine Oxman; brothers Garnet, Roger and Ted, sisters-in-law Myrtle and Juann DeBin, Margaret Larmour, Helen Bartlett and Joyce Oxman; brothers-in-law Louis Klein-Beekman, Mike Oxman, Tony Oxman, Bob Larmour and Eric Bartlett. She is survived by her husband Jim, three sons, Morris, Chris and Jeff, her daughters-in-law Oksana Bilas-Oxman, Michelle Oxman and grandchildren James and Anna Marie, sister Rose Klein-Beekman, brothers Fred and Louis DeBin, sisters-in-law Lois DeBin, Verna Oxman as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Angela had the privilege of making many friends and was very grateful for all their kindness, encouragement and prayers during her struggle with cancer. She was grateful too for the exceptional care given by staff at Pasqua Hospital Blair Memorial Clinic, the Emergency Unit and the Palliative Home Care Program. The special attention given during this time by her personal physician, Dr. J. S. McMillan was truly appreciated. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Christ the King R.C.
