GOERTZ, Kurt Heinz
Kurt passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 21, 2009 at the age of 93 in the Veterans Unit 3-5 of the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, his home for the past five years. Kurt was predeceased by his wife Emma (nee Tiefenbach) in 1998, parents Friedrich and Amanda, brothers Helmut and Alfred and sisters Gerda Adam and Kay McNamara. Kurt is survived by his daughter Pam, son-in-law Garnet Garven, loving granddaughter Laurel Garven, brother-in-law Ernie Wolfe, special cousin Nora Kaminski and several nieces and nephews. Kurt was born May 8, 1916 in the Free State of Danzig. At age 13, Kurt and his family immigrated to Canada, residing in Mannville, Alberta. He later moved to Edmonton, then to Regina, where he and Emma operated Goertz Photography Studio for over 30 years, retiring in 1978. Kurt was an active volunteer his entire life. He held life-time memberships in the Wa Wa Shrine, St. Andrews Masonic Lodge, Regina Central Lions Club, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Executives Association of Regina. Kurt enjoyed his service in the Wa Wa Shrine Drill Corps and his time as District Governor for Lions Clubs International where he organized many clubs across Saskatchewan. A veteran of World War II, Kurts volunteer work with the Royal Canadian Legion #1 Branch was recognized with the Meritorious Service Medal and the Palm Leaf. Kurt enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Laurel. He loved entertaining, barbecuing, coffee time at the Golden Mile, tending his yard and volunteering. Once at Wascana, he turned his attention to entertaining the staff and participating in the many Veterans programs and activities.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Veterans Unit at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for the kindness and special care shown to Kurt over the past five years. It will always be appreciated and never forgotten.
