PETER JAMES FITZGERALD Peter James Fitzgerald passed away peacefully, on July 5, 2009. Peter was eased into his final rest accompanied by his loving family. Husband of the late Heather. Father of Anthony, Michael (Ann), Ann Tracey (Paul). Grandfather of Sean Tracey. He was born in Buncranna, Donegal, Ireland at the dawn of a new independent Republic of Ireland on September 14, 1920. His dad Jim was a policeman and his mum Margaret was a nurse. He moved to New Brighton when he was less than a year old together with his beloved aunts Annie and Mary Fox. Peter got his first job as a commi first class waiter on the Cunard's SS Sameria making 18 voyages from Liverpool to NYC. Peter would walk through Manhattan gazing at the tall buildings, take in a dinner and Broadway show. Three years later found him in less than luxurious surroundings, a tent in Libya, chasing Rommel as part of the 7th Army's desert rats. "You dug a hole, threw down your bivouac and that's where you slept. Sometimes with company, of a snake or scorpion. In 1948, he joined the Bibby Line, sailing on Cheshire, Empire Pride and the Somersetshire (where he met the love of his life Heather). He reveled in his passions of the sea, travel, and infernally hot curry. After they married, they moved to Canada, where Peter worked on the Avro Arrow, and later with the Department of Communications. He will forever be known as a great orator, loving husband, caring father, a silly Irishman, and a good friend. Cremation took place in Regina on July 9, 2009.
