Obituary of Phillip George Dawson

Phillip George Dawson, loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away in the morning of Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the age of 79, after teaching us how to live with cancer. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 54 years, Maxyne; their children, Karen (Tom) Cumbers, Grant (Joanne) Dawson, Charlene Riess; two grandsons, Curtis Dawson and Kai Riess; brother, Ted (Jackie) Dawson; brother-in-laws, Norval Curry and Dale (Betty) Child; and many special nieces and nephews. He lived his life to the fullest: From working hard, to enjoying his retirement. From learning to sail the mighty Wascana Lake, to competing in national sailing competitions, representing Saskatchewan in sailing at the 1st Canadian Summer Games held in Halifax. In later years, he and Maxyne were actively involved in the Lake Diefenbaker Yacht Club: cruising, racing, and making lifelong friendships. Phil worked at, and then managed, Electric Motor Service until his retirement in 1989. In the winter months, he loved learning how to downhill ski with Kai, watching Curtis volleyball and basketball games, and seeing Kai run a triathlon in Kelowna last summer. He loved his skating, sailing when the wind was really blowing, and playing badminton until January when his breathing wouldnt allow him to continue. However, it never stopped him cleaning the neighborhood sidewalks with his snow blower. Following in his fathers footsteps, he spent many years helping to keep St. Matthews Anglican Church in good repair. A special thank you to Dr. Peter Van Rooyen; the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers of the Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit; the Palliative Home Care nurses, workers and musicians that all cared for Phil so compassionately. Memorial Service for Phil will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthews Anglican Church, 2161 Winnipeg Street, Regina with Rev. Blair Dixon officiating. In lieu of flowers; donations, in memory of Phil Dawson, may be made to the Regina Palliative Care, 4F-4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 7T1.
