Obituary of August Peter Wingert

It is with great sadness that the family of August (Gus) Peter Wingert announces his passing on Monday, November 16, 2009. Gus was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anna; his three sisters, Sophie, Rose and Anne and his brother John. Gus leaves to mourn his loving wife of 70 years, Helen; his daughters Charlene (Terry) Kilburn and Cynthia (Trevor) Mowat; his grandchildren Derek (Pamela) Kilburn, Courtney (Dwayne) Strong, Adam (Kelly) Kilburn and Chad Kilburn; and great-grandchildren Sam, Livia, Wyatt, Sawyer and Mason. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and their children spread throughout Canada and the USA. Gus was born on July 20, 1917 in Regina and went to work at Regina News Ltd. at a very young age in order to help support his family. He worked at Regina News for 65 years and only retired because the company was sold. He started as a stock boy and elevated himself to the position of Vice President, a job he loved and at which he excelled. Gus was a family man --- he loved his wife and daughters and made sure they were always looked after before all else. He was always there to help when they needed him and he watched over them like a shepherd. He also looked after all of his relatives in the same way --- when they needed assistance, he was there to help. He took great pride in his two daughters, his four grandchildren and his five great-grandchildren. Gus loved to travel --- When Charlene and Cyndi were young, each summer was spent visiting Helens relatives throughout Canada and the USA. Gus and Helen also loved spending time at their cabin in Regina Beach on many weekends where they would visit with family and friends. In the later years Gus and Helen enjoyed many trips to Hawaii and upon the arrival of their grandchildren they relished trips to Disneyland and Disneyworld with everyone in tow. Gus also loved his friends at the Regina Police Department where he earned the nickname Punch? and had a lot of fun over the years with his good friends Don Cronk, Marv Kereluke and Jack Jake? Hill among others. He was a big sports fan and followed the Edmonton Oilers, Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Regina Pats for many seasons. Gus had a simple and wonderful plan " love your family, your relatives and your friends and for that you will get lots of love in return. His plan worked. On behalf of the family we wish to express our gratitude for the kindness and compassion shown by Dr. Zagozeski and Dr. Coruzzi, Department of Family Medicine, as well as the staff at Regina General Hospital, Unit 3F. We would also like to acknowledge the many kindnesses evidenced through thought and deed of our family and friends. A celebration of Gus life will be held at Heritage Alliance Church, 3575 Hillsdale Street at 1:00 PM in Regina on Friday November 20, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gus memory may be made to the Salvation Army-Div. Headquarters, 2240- 13th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3M7 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK, S4P 2R3.
