Obituary of Sister Marie Elizabeth Hogan

HOGAN, Sister Marie, a Sister of Our Lady of the Missions, died peacefully at the Regina General Hospital on Thursday, November 19, 2009. Born in Winnipeg, MB on April 21, 1916 to Thomas and Sarah (McKeown) Hogan, Sister was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Eileen, Rita, Dorothy, Kathleen Masters, Lenore Kuntz, Olive Leboldus, Genevieve Ganske and brothers Michael and Thomas. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Cathy Kuntz-Hill and Rev. Fr. Gary Kuntz as well as by grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Sister attended school in Finley, SK and at Sacred Heart Academy in Regina. In 1933 she joined the congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions where she was given the name Sister Mary St. Catherine. Marie taught in Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances, ON and in Brandon and Winnipeg, MB for forty years. For most of her life she had positions of authority and responsibility in the congregation. Marie was known by the Sisters for her attentive care for others, her good sense, absolute fairness, business acumen, and virtually unshakeable composure. Marie was devoted to her family as they were to her, holding her in deep affection and great respect. In 1998 she retired to Saskatchewan where she lived first in Lebret and then in Regina. Sister spent her last sixteen months as a patient at Santa Maria Home. Her family as well as the Sisters wish to extend warm thanks to the Santa Maria staff, Emergency Room and 3E staff at the General Hospital and Dr. Kothare who cared for her with such care and compassion. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Santa Maria Chapel, 4215 Regina Avenue, with Rev. Ken Koep presiding. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers friends may wish to send a donation to the Mission Fund of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, 310 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 0G7.
