Obituary of Roy Joseph Lockert

ROY JOSEPH LOCKERT Roy Joseph Lockert, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Eleanor; sister Anne; brothers-in-law Wes Temple, Ted Gilson and Jack Thomson; and sisters-in-law, Winona Temple, Josephine, Emily, Leona, and Sheilagh. Roy is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Virginia; children Carol (Doug) Blender of Surrey, BC (James [Amanda and children Tallulah and Elliott], Sean [Christine and daughter Lilyanne], Adam, Kevin [Amanda]); Mona (Randy) Arthur of Red Deer, AB (Curtiss [Kelly], Kendra [Matt], Kyle [Jennifer]); Elaine (Ken) Friesen of Calgary, AB (Kelsey, Julie); Colin (Jacqui) of Regina (Mac, Becky, Ben); Mark of Regina (Amanda); Mae (Donn) Farrer of Drinkwater, SK (Roy, Ian, Lee); and Robin of Toronto, ON. He also leaves to mourn brothersHenry, Wendel, Ben, and Bill (Marcelle), brother-in-law Bruce (Leila) Thomson, sisters-in-law Margaret (Randy) Krenz and Eva Thomson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In his early life, Roy attended elementary school at St Fransiscus rural, grades 9 and 10 by correspondence, and grades 11 and 12 at Ursaline High School in Vibank. He later studied at the University of Saskatchewan and earned two bachelor degrees. Roy first started teaching in 1943, but joined His Majestys Forces in 1944 and served as a wireless instructor stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After returning to civilian life in 1946, Roy completed his university education and later resumed his teaching career in Makwa, SK where he met the love of his life, a young elementary school teacher by the name of Virginia Thomson. Roy continued to teach, moving Virginia and their growing family first to Morse, on to Saskatoon, then Hodgeville and ultimately to Regina in 1963. While in Regina, Roy taught one year at Central Collegiate, then was appointed as vice principal of ONeill High School. He then became principal of ONeill, Campion and finally the first principal of Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School. Roy retired in 1980 after 35 years of teaching and school administration. Following a few fun years of selling cars at Regina Motor Products, Roy and Virginia officially retired? to spend their next 13 winters in Arizona. Roy and Virginia ultimately settled back in Regina year round, where in the end they spent their final days together in the care of the loving staff of the William Albert House of Emerald Park. Roy belonged to numerous organizations throughout his adult life but was most proud of his association with the Knights of Columbus Council #1247 as a 4th Degree Grand Knight. As a younger man Roy was an avid ball player, curler, and hunter. In retirement Roy loved to spend time golfing and playing bridge with friends. He and Virginia travelled extensively through western Canada and the USA, spending as much time as they could with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Annes Roman Catholic Church, 1701 Cowan Crescent, Regina on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ken Koep officiating.
