Obituary of Elizabeth 'Pearl' Spooner

Pearl, late of Regina, died peacefully in Regina General Hospital on January 1, 2010, at the age of 83 years. She was born to Alex and Anne McKinnon in Prince Rupert, BC on September 3, 1926. Raised and educated in Lemberg, SK, Pearl moved to Regina to begin her nurses training at Regina General Hospital in 1945. She graduated in 1948 and eventually became head nurse on the orthopedic ward of that hospital, a position she held for twenty-three years. She married Dr. Harold Spooner in 1969 and shared his life as a loving, supportive wife until his death in 1975. In 1999, Pearl moved to Marion Chateau where she became one of the original residents of that facility. Although her life was deeply affected by long standing, chronic health concerns, Pearl lived her life with tremendous courage and dignity, often using humour and a feisty attitude to get her through some of the challenges. She was very appreciative of the wonderful Home Care nurses who visited and cared for her four times a day. She valued these skilled and compassionate women and men and looked on them as friends who truly provided her with a lifeline to the outside world. Pearl was a passionate supporter of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, having held season tickets most of her adult life. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Harold Spooner and her parents Alex and Anne McKinnon, and leaves to honour her memory her sister Vi Curtis; brother Wayne McKinnon (wife Joan), sister Heather Ostapak (husband Donald) and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make donations, in memoriam, to the Hospitals of Regina, Regina General Hospital, 1440 " 14th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 0W5 or the Salvation Army " Division Headquarters, 2240 13th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3M7.
