Obituary of Jeanette Schafer

Jeanette, late of Regina, SK, and formerly of Mankota, SK, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 9, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Jeanette was born in the Rosefield District in southwest Saskatchewan and spent her early years on the farm. The family relocated to the farm at McLean, SK in the 1930's. Jeanette eventually met and married Steve Matt, and established a farm west of Balgonie and started their family there. They later sold the farm and relocated to Regina, where they operated an Esso Service Station on Arcola Ave East until 1957. After Steve passed on, she married William (Bill) Schafer and they established their home in Mankota, SK where they farmed until Bill retired. Jeanette and Bill were always on the go, travelling extensively, and spending summers at the cabin at Etter's Beach. They enjoyed visiting with and hosting their many friends and relatives. Jeanette was always very involved in local activities in the community; she always maintained a strong relationship to her faith and church. She will be kindly remembered and missed by those whose lives she touched. Jeanette was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Melunia (Glas) Laturnus; brother George, first husband Stephen Matt, second husband William Schafer, brothers-in-law Ed Wickenheiser and John Keck. Jeanette is survived by her very special daughter Florence (Flossie) of Regina, sons: Charles (Vicki Gerwing) of Saskatoon; Gerry of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Norm (Judy) of Ucluelet, BC; Bob (Linda) of Pilot Butte, Gord (Rita) of Regina, and Arnie (Louise) of Regina; sixteen grandchildren, Shelly (Nolan) Tabashniuk, Dean (Amy), Chad (Kirby), Craig (Carla), Ashlee, Brianne, Gabe (Katherine Hadley), Vince, Nicole (Adame) Fabian, Tara, Dana, Ian, Darcy (Tyler) Kennedy, Chelsee, Alyssa, Emily; eight great grandchildren; her sisters: Doreen Wickenheiser and Emilia Keck of Regina; brother Jim (Bev) of Chilliwack, BC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers for family and friends will be held on Thursday January 14, 2010 at 7:00 PM in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Ave, Regina. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 10:30 AM in Holy Child RC Chuch, 2636 7th Ave East, Regina with Rev. Lorne Crozon presiding.
