Obituary of John Howard Struthers

It is with fond memories and deep sadness that the family announces the passing of John on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the age of 85 years. He was predeceased by his father Howard, mother Mabel and stepmother Margaret, his loving wife of over 40 years, Eleanor in 2000, his brother Harry in 2004 and brother-in-law John Hosey. John will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Bernadette (Rich) McIntyre of Regina, sons Ian of Bethune and Ted (Mary) of Ogema. John thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren Jonathan (Nicole), Nicholas (Danelle) and Benjamin Struthers, and Lisa and Shawn McIntyre and their many friends. John is also survived by his sister Dorothy (Peter) Rorbeck and their family Sandra, Debbie (Barclay) Cook and Barry (Darlene) and sister-in-law Beatrice Struthers and her family Howard (Marielle), Susan (Glen) Viergutz, Cathy (David) Webb, David (Sally) and his many great nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his close friend and cousin Janet Perkin of Regina and her family, cousin Les Struthers of Weyburn, and his family, brother-in-law William Hosey, sister-in-law Paula (Keith) Matheson and sister in law Betty Hosey as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in England. John was born in Bethune on August 11, 1924 to Howard and Mabel (nee Anderson) Struthers and spent his entire life in the Bethune area, which he loved very much. He was raised on the farm, and farming was his life. He especially enjoyed the cattle business. In 1956, he married Eleanor Hosey, a teacher on a two year exchange from England. They raised three children and were very involved in the community. John was on the Bethune Credit Union board for over 50 years " a volunteer job he really enjoyed He was a Wheat Pool Committee Member, a member of the IOOF lodge, a hockey team manager, a ball coach, youth curling coordinator, and served on the School Board, the United Church Board, the 50+Club Board and the History Book Committee. John enjoyed many sports as a participant and fan; he was an avid curler and volunteer and followed the sport until his final days. He was a dedicated Rider fan and season ticket holder for many years. John loved to visit and he and Eleanor had many wonderful times with family, friends and neighbors. They travelled to Alberta to visit cousins and always enjoyed touring English relatives around the flat prairies and to the mountains. John was a caring, generous, kind and friendly man who helped anyone in need. He loved his family and enjoyed his grandchildren immensely. He will be greatly missed. The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff at Pioneer Village, Main West for their devoted and compassionate care over the past two years. Also to the great staff at the Pasqua Hospital in Emergency Services, Ward 3D and the Palliative Care Unit, your caring and professionalism was amazing and greatly appreciated. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010 in the Bethune Community Hall with Rev. Dexter Van Dyke officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethune Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
