Obituary of Edgar Wesley Cooke

Edgar peacefully passed away February 13, 2010 at Pioneer Village. Edgar was blessed to have his children John and Sonia, niece Cindy and family as well as close friends to help him through his final journey. Born at the Cooke homestead on October 18, 1920 in Duff, SK. Edgar grew up when hard work was a way of life. Taking an interest in agriculture Edgar began judging livestock exhibitions. Edgar enlisted in the R.C.A.F. serving in WWII stationed in England and North Africa as a bomber plane mechanic. While stationed in England Edgar met and married his wife Joan November 18, 1944 in York. After the war ended they returned to Canada and settled at the Cooke home in Duff. Starting their family with John they soon moved to Melville where Sonia was born. In 1949 the family moved to Rae Street in Regina where they raised their family and opened their home to countless others. Edgar drove truck for Imperial Oil until his retirement. True and loyal Edgar always made an effort to visit his family and friends across Canada, in the US and England, returned regularly to the Duff/Abernethy Annual Fairs and remained a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Along with Joan he enjoyed square dancing, spending time with their family and being members of St. Peters Anglican Church. As an avid gardener he shared his bounty with many. Always involved in sports Edgar played ball, curled, coached hockey, umpired baseball, attended the Roughrider games and was a great mentor to many. Generous with his time Edgar worked tirelessly to help others in need whether it was lending a helping hand or extending comfort. Edgar cared for his wife Joan at home until she entered pioneer Village with Alzheimers in 2002, where he then visited daily and continued to share meal times with her until her passing. Edgar moved into Pioneer Manor 2004 caring for himself until his health failed after a stay in hospital he requested a move to Pioneer Long Term Care in late December 2009. Edgar was predeceased by his parents Ernest (Wes) and Ivy Cooke, brother Robert, sister-in-law June all of Regina, son-in-law Ken Collin of Thompson, Manitoba. Left with warm loving memories are son John (Gerry), daughter Sonia (Ron), granddaughters Sherry (Mark), Shannon, Jillian and grandson Garrett and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and England. The family would like to thank the staff of Pioneer Village and 3E, for their loving care and support they offered Edgar. If family and friends so wish they may donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of their choice. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 10:00 am in All Saints Anglican Church, 142 Massey Road, Regina with The Rev. Dr. Trish McCarthy officiating.
