Obituary of Douglas Alexander Tulloch

The family of Douglas Tulloch sadly announces the passing of their father. Dad was the son of Thomas and Margaret Tulloch. He was predeceased by his parents; wife of 50 years, June; brothers William and Harold; and sisters-in-law, Muriel and Ruth. He leaves to mourn his six children: Pat, Carolyn (John), Neil (Lynn), Bruce (Pat), David (Terre), and Ross (Merilee). He will be sadly missed by 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his brother-in-law, Courtney (Vera) and family, nieces, nephews and cousins. Dad was born in Moose Jaw and raised in the Dummer district. As a child he attended the Wagner school which started his lifelong love of education. His activities included baseball, hockey, playing the fiddle at dances and school events. Upon leaving school, he farmed with his father and his brother, Harold, his best friend. During the Second World War, Dad enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was posted in Winnipeg as a radio operator and instructor. He was dispatched to England just as the war ended and met our mother in 1945. On December 21, 1947, in Romford, Essex, he married June Kitching, a British War Office employee. They returned to Canada and continued farming, now with his wife, and eventually with his sons until he retired to Regina in 1994. Dad was an active and loyal member of the Dummer district, always willing to lend a hand. He supported all community projects: as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher of the United Church, as the secretary to the Dummer Telephone Company and Wheat Pool Committee, he fought to retain the rail line, and worked diligently to publish the Dummer History Book which became his reference guide. He was a member of the Historical Society that placed six stones and plaques, permanently marking the sites of the early schools and the townsite of Dummer. Dad was the family historian and took this responsibility to heart. With each of his children, he returned to his fathers birthplace on the island of North Ronaldsay, Scotland. Another family trip to Australia was orchestrated by Dad in 1994 where we met relatives he only knew by name. Dad was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather and instilled in all, the importance and love of family. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina. In lieu of flowers, donations in Douglas memory may be made to a charity of choice.
