Obituary of The Honourable Edward Dmytro Bayda
Honourable Edward D. Bayda passed away suddenly in Izmir, Turkey on April 2, 2010 at the age of 78. He was born in Alvena, Saskatchewan, on September 9, 1931. Regina has been home to the former Chief Justice of Saskatchewan since the early 1950s. Ed is predeceased by: his first wife, Yvonne; his parents, Mary and Dmytro Bayda; and his sister, Jane Strohan. Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine Bethell, and his children: Paula (Keith) Ainsley; Chris (Melinda) Bayda; Margot (Richard) Brown; Marie-Thrse (Kamal) Verma; Sheila Bayda (Basil Karahalios); Kathryn (Dean) Pasiuk; Brydie Bethell (Simon Archer); 22 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by: his sisters, Emily Stecyk and Mary Mason; Lorraines mother, Natalie Wowk; and Lorraines brother, Barry Wowk. Ed was also a favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed spending time with family in Kelowna and in Montserrat, Saturday trips to Canadian Tire, his meticulously preserved 72 Lincoln, parties with family and friends, admiring the yard, going to the symphony and quietly reading. Ed perfected the art of communicating with his family using cryptic notes and abbreviations on yellow stickies. Through his love of the human spirit, he frequently engaged in conversation with people from all walks of life. His infectious, gregarious laugh brought genuine joy to all. He kept the people he loved, and a good glass of scotch, close to his heart. Law was Eds work, hobby and passion. It was important to him because law is about people. Ed loved people, everything about them. Above all, Ed cherished family more than he could ever express. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Ed can be made to the Regina Food Bank, 445 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK S4R 8P2 or to a local arts organization.
