Obituary of Peter Shklanka

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our friend and brother, Peter Shklanka, in Regina on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Peter will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his brother John (Pat) and niece Erin, and by his many close friends and work associates. He was predeceased by his father Harry and mother Nettie. Peter was born in Winnipeg on April 6, 1958. He graduated from Murdoch Mackay High School in Transcona and went on to achieve a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree from the University of Manitoba in 1981. After graduation, Peter moved to Regina where he took a position as a software developer with Co-Operators Data Services (CDSL). After a number of years, he left to work as an independent contractor at various locations, before deciding to take on employment at Farm Credit Corporation. Peter was very actively involved in his church, St. Athanasius. He was a member of the brotherhood, and past president of the Knights of Columbus. He served for over 20 years as church treasurer and was also treasurer of the Bingo committee and the mens brotherhood at the time of his passing. Peter was a very avid golfer and curler. He curled in both mens and mixed leagues at the Callie Curling Club. He particularly enjoyed his summer visits to Winnipeg, where he would challenge his brother and friends to some friendly? rounds of golf at various courses. He found occasion to travel back to Winnipeg a few times a year and maintained many close friendships there. After spending nearly 30 years in Regina, for Peter, Regina was home. His many and varied interests and close friends made it a place where he wanted to stay. He switched allegiance from the Blue and Gold and became a staunch Rider fan. Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 10, 2010 at St. Athanasius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 55 McMurchy Avenue, Regina. Divine Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in St. Athanasius Ukrainian Catholic Church, with Father Andrei Kachur officiating. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Regina General Hospital, for their care and compassion. To honor Peters memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279-3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon SK S7K 2H8, or to a charity of choice.
