Obituary of Mary Onufer

ONUFER " Mary Onufer passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 81 years. Predeceased by her parents Steve and Anna Matula; her husband John; her brothers, Francis and Anthony. Mary is survived by her sons, John (Elena) and Joseph (Monica); grandson, John (Ethel); granddaughter, Andrea (Jeffrey); great-grandchildren, Joshua and Sara. Mary (grandma) was born on September 11, 1927 in a small village of Borsky Mikulas, Slovakia to a poor family and had a very hard life growing up. Her mother somehow scraped enough money so Mary could become a seamstress, a trade that she enjoyed and worked in after immigrating to Canada in 1964 until her retirement. Mary loved to cook traditional Slovak dishes which were enjoyed by all of the family and will be missed. She and her husband also did a lot of traveling to Europe and to warm places during the winters, staying away four to six months at a time, leaving the easy task of snow shoveling to us. Grandma Mary was a generous and also a humorous person, her pranks were original, well thought out, but no one was ever offended. She was always on guard so it was very difficult to get even with her. Mary also had a temper and one heck of a right hand, to which our shoulders could attest to on numerous occasions. Her anger would disappear as quickly as it came and her qualities of love, care and generosity would prevail. And that is how we remember our mother, grandma and great-grandma. Have a pleasant trip and eternal peace Amen. Prayers will be held on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Marys R. C. Church, 2026 Winnipeg Street, Regina with Rev. Danilo Rafael presiding. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make donations, in memoriam, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 " 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.
