Obituary of Dorothy May Lekivetz
DOROTHY MAY LEKIVETZ
On Friday, March 27, 2009, Dorothy May Lekivetz, passed away at her home in Regina a month shy of her 97th birthday. Predeceased by her husband, Leoanard Lawrence Lekivetz, sisters, Ethel, Lena, Evelyn and brothers, Archie, Maitland, Arnold and Mansel, she is survived by nieces and nephews, Evelyn Herman, Darleen McKenzie, Heather Stumph, Rosemary Fiedrich, Suzanne Bennett, Robbie Ross, Shelley Ross, James Ross, George Ross and Julia Ross, Don Anderson, as well as several great nieces and nephews. Born to pioneer farmers, Angus and Margaret Ross on Caledonia Farm, near Milestone on May 9, 1912, Dorothy became known as Dollie by the age of three. Growing up on the family farm, she loved horses, playing ball and attending town dances chaperoned by her older brothers, of course. Upon graduating from high school, she worked as a housekeeper and nanny for Frank Sattler and his family. On June 22, 1937, she married Lennie and moved to his farm northeast of Milestone. As a farm wife, she worked in the fields, maintained gardens, curled in winter and entertained friends and family in the grand Lekivetz farmhouse. She excelled at baking and began entering breads and cakes in the Provincial Exhibition in Regina where, in 1965, she took first prize for her Jubilee cake. In 1954, Lennie and Dollie sold the farm and moved into their home in Regina where they lived for the next fifty years. In winter, they traveled throughout the United States, spending time in California where Dollie took classes in cooking and many interesting crafts. When they discovered Hawaii, they wintered there for many years and developed lifelong friendships with many people there. At the young age of 65, Dollie took up the game of lawn bowling. She became an excellent lawn bowler and represented Saskatchewan in many national tournaments, coached new bowlers and in later years traveled to tournaments around the world. For family members and friends alike, Dollie has been a gift. Always generous, thoughtful and kind, she took an interest in people and the detail of their lives. She has shared the memories of her life, with humour and grace. Thank you to Heather Stumph and Suzanne Bennett for granting her last wish to die peacefully at home. Thank you to Paul Loftsgard for always being there and to the many friends and neighbours who visited these last months. At Dollies request there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Regina Lawn Bowling Club, 3820 Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK S4T 1M6.
