Obituary of Dorothy May Schwartz

SCHWARTZ - On Monday, April 6, 2009, Mrs. Dorothy Schwartz of Regina, Sk. passed away at the age of 71. She is survived by her two sons Arnold (Martha) of Florida, Lloyd (Carlene) and their son Joshua of Regina, as well as numerous others. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Danny, two brothers Ralph and Lloyd Cassel and parents Nathan and Elsie May Cassel. Dorothy was born and raised in northern Saskatchewan in the Porcupine Plain/Torch River area. She eventually moved to Regina, Sk. and began working at The Grey Nuns Hospital in the laundry department. It was also during this time that she met and married her husband Danny. After having two children, Dorothy decided to remain in the home in order to care for her family. During her boys school years, she also enjoyed spending her time gardening as well as volunteering at the Kitchener School library. Dorothy won many awards for the beautiful gardens that she planted every year. She eventually saw both of her sons graduate from high school and get married, which was something she was always very proud of. In Dorothys later years she moved to The Horizon seniors complex in downtown Regina. She made fast friends with many people in the building. Anyone who knew Dorothy knew that she was a proud Saskatchewan Roughrider fan and a proud grandmother. Whenever there was a football game on, you could count on Dorothy to be glued to her television screen or listening intently to her radio cheering madly. She was definitely a faithful fan! In 2007, Dorothys first grandchild, Joshua, was born. This was definitely one of the proudest moments in her life. Dorothy loved being a grandmother and had a special connection with Joshua. She was always quick to brag to others about her special little guy. Joshua was the apple of her eye! In November 2008, Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer. She had a short but courageous battle with the disease before the Lord called her home. There will be a prayer service for family and friends held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue. The burial service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Regina Old Cemetery, corner of Broad St. and 4th Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make a donation to The Canadian Cancer Society or The Regina Food Bank.
