Obituary of Peter Joseph Maier

MAIER, PETER J. January 21, 1921 " May 12, 2009 With great sadness, the Maier family announces the passing of Peter - our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend " on May 12, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Adolf and Amalia Maier; brothers, Adolphe, Joseph, Bill, Leo, Arthur; and sisters, Anne, Rose, Tina, Mary and Lauretta. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Millie (Deutscher); son, Danny (Donna) and grandchildren Marian (Ian), Jennifer (Jay) of Montreal, PQ and Rebecca of Montreal, PQ; daughter, Cathy (Steve) Horvath of St. Albert, AB and grandchildren Julia of Ottawa, ON, Janet (Cameron) and great-granddaughter Olivia Newton of Fort McMurray, AB and Steven of Edmonton, AB; son, Jim (Cheryl) and grandchildren Miles and April; son Peter Jr. Peter will also be lovingly remembered by his brothers Jacob of Moose Jaw, Arnold (Pat); sister Victoria Fairhart of Oshawa, ON; brothers-in-law Latham Dusterbeck, Willie Deutscher, Ed Deutscher and Bob Deutscher (Lisa) of Calgary, AB; special niece Donna Mae West and many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews and wonderful friends and neighbours. Peter was born at Bayard, Saskatchewan. He attended Hapsburg School and then apprenticed at Western Printers. From April, 1942 to April, 1946, Peter served with the Canadian Army, primarily at Victoria, B.C. In January, 1946 he married Millie Deutscher, and they enjoyed 63 years together. Following his war service, Peter continued his printing career at Western Printers, and then worked as a compositor at Service Printers. He retired from Peerless Printers at the age of 62. Peter was an active member of the International Typographical Union for 60 years and was secretary of the Allied Printing Trades Council for 20 years. For many years, Peter was a contributing member of the St. Marys Credit Union and served as an usher at St. Marys R. C. Church. Peter was an avid hockey fan who held Regina Pats seasons tickets for 50 years. He loved gardening, dancing, listening to music and spending many evenings playing cards with family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, 2026 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Danilo T. Rafael presiding. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Tributes in Peters memory may be made to the St. Marys Roman Catholic Church Building Fund, 2026 Winnipeg Street, Regina S4P 1G6.
