Obituary of Gladys Jean Duke

GLADYS JEAN DUKE (NEE: WEIR)_ Passed away August 8, 2007 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Regina Pasqua Hospital from health complications. She is survived by her son Murray Duke of Regina, daughter Barbara Duke (Michael) of Richmond, BC; granddaughter Alexis Mulvihill (Paul) of Cloverdale, BC; great granddaughters Ryleigh and Taryn Mulvihill. Jean was predeceased by her husband Wesley Duke, 1983; and a dear friend and companion, Cecil Sanderson, 2006. Jean was born March 6th, 1930 in Dubuc, North West Township, Saskatchewan to Marshall and Isabel Weir (nee: Austin). Jean was the seventh of nine children. Carl Weir (deceased); Arnold Weir (deceased); James Weir (deceased); Lawrence Weir (deceased); Isabel (Glen) Ruse, Regina; Grant (Irene) Weir, Regina; Harvey (Blanche) Weir, St. Catherine's, Ontario; Hazel (Albert) Kovacs, Esterhazy. Jean is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Duke, Regina; brother-in-law, Bill Haga, Maryland, USA and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Special thanks to her niece's Lark Feather and Nancy Sonder who spent a lot of time with Jean during her hospitalization. Jean moved to Regina in 1950 where she resided until her passing. Jean worked at SaskTel as a Long Distance Operator until the birth of her two children. In recent years, she was an avid card player, lawn bowler, five pin bowler, golfer, curler and dancer. She enjoyed memorable winter holidays in Victoria, British Columbia. Jean enjoyed the socializing and competition with the many people she became friends with over the years. She often talked about the games, the players and the play, with anyone who would listen. Jean shared a long friendship with forever neighbours, Merv and Betty King; neighbours Elmer and Lydia Hinzmann; bridge partners Phil and Margaret; special friends Pearl Knutson, Mary Hinchcliffe and Iris Fletcher. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit who kept Jean comfortable during her last days. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue. Private interment of ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Winnipeg Senior Centre, 2134 Winnipeg Street, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3X6.
