Obituary of Hazel Eleanor Neden

NEDEN - Hazel Neden (nee Groh) was twenty-eight years old when she left the comforts of her life in Toronto to marry a farmer in Canada's west. Years later, Hazel reminisced about weekend trips to New York City with her father and high tea at Royal York Hotel, a stark contrast to the wind swept prairie farm she shared with her new husband in Southern Alberta. The early years on the prairies were tough. The farm made very little money and the family was constantly on the move. But those years also blessed Hazel with three children. As the children grew, the family moved to The Pas, Manitoba. After her husband passed away, Hazel moved to Saskatchewan to be with her daughter and family. She settled in Regina, but soon embarked on her life long dream of traveling abroad. She saw the pyramids in Egypt and spent time in Israel. In the coming years she would also travel to Australia, the Caribbean and parts of Europe. In Regina, Hazel returned to university as an adult student. She loved to learn, a trait she had inherited from her father, an inventor and sometimes lecturer at the University of Toronto. Hazel focused her studies on anthropology, archaeology and religious studies. Hazel was a devote Christian who throughout her life gave generously to children touched by war and poverty. On August 8, 2007, Hazel Neden passed away at the age of 90. She is predeceased by her husband, John William Clarence Neden and by her son, John Wesley Neden. She is remembered by her daughter Susan Neden, her son David Neden, her daughters-in-law Odile Perquia and Patricia Neden, her son-in-law Wesley Gordon, and her six grandchildren (Nathaniel, Julie, Jonathan, Sheena, Lucile and Clara) who will never forget the delicious and colourful birthday cakes grandma made! A graveside gathering will be held at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Regina on August 13th at 2:30 pm followed by a picnic in Wascana Park.
